BOOMERANG EFFECT

Have you come across a persuasive message that requests something but people do the opposite of what is expected of them?

Of course, if you are in Kenya you have. In walls where it is written ‘No posters, people still find a way of sticking them.’ What about, ‘Usikojoe hapa?’ people still end up doing it. Welcome to Kenya!

So how does boomerang effect come about? It is brought about adoption of an opposing option of what was requested; Psychological reactance. Psychological reactance occurs when one feels that there is an agent or individual trying to limit their choice of response or range to alternatives.

Secondly, boomerang effect may stir non-conformity when an individual is deviant; they do not want to obey set rules. These are individuals who just do not want to obey.

Other than that, non-conformity can come about from dissonance. Cognitive dissonance occurs when a situation brings conflicting attitudes, beliefs and behaviors creating a feeling of mental discomfort leading to alteration in order to cause balance. I.E Someone might know it is wrong to walk (Behavior) on the lawn but they still do despite knowing there are fines if one is caught (Cognition).

Now you know!
