Inside the Writing Right Na Kinya Awards 2026 Writers' Bootcamp

Winning an award is exciting. It is a moment of recognition, celebration and validation. But what happens after the applause fades?

For the top 17 winners of the Writing Right Na Kinya Awards 2026, the journey was only beginning. Following the awards ceremony, the winners transitioned into an intensive writers’ bootcamp designed to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed to take their writing to the next level. Bringing together experts from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Nigeria, the bootcamp became a unique space for learning, growth and collaboration.

Participants explored a wide range of topics that every writer encounters at some point in their journey. They learned the importance of research before writing and how good writing often begins long before the first word is placed on the page. They discussed writers’ block, how to navigate it and how to maintain consistency even when inspiration seems distant.

The sessions also covered the art of writing fiction, nonfiction and scripts. Writers gained practical insights into developing compelling stories, building strong characters and creating work that resonates with readers. They learned why editing matters, how to choose the right editor and the value of having fresh eyes review a manuscript before publication.

The conversations extended beyond writing itself. Participants were introduced to copyright, ISBNs, book design, layout and publishing processes. They also explored one of the questions that troubles many writers: once the book is written, how do you get people to read it? Experts shared practical strategies on marketing, branding and selling creative work in today’s landscape.

Perhaps the most exciting outcome of the bootcamp was what happened when these talented writers came together. Rather than ending the experience with a certificate, they embarked on a collaborative writing project. Working across genres, perspectives and experiences, they contributed to a collection centered on the theme “The Politics Today.”

The project challenged participants to reflect on the realities shaping our societies and to use storytelling as a tool for dialogue, critique and imagination. The result is a rich collection of voices that captures the diversity, creativity and thoughtfulness of a new generation of writers.

As the manuscripts move through the final stages of editing and production, one thing is clear: the Writing Right Na Kinya Awards were never just about identifying talent. They were about nurturing it.

Keep an eye out for the upcoming collaborative collection, “The Politics Today.” It is a book born from learning, collaboration and the belief that great writers are not only discovered but developed. The awards may have ended, but for these 17 writers, a new chapter is just beginning.
